The Child Development Center (CDC) at Scott’s Run Settlement House will officially be closing its doors on November 24, 2010 after 41 years.
The Board of Directors state that the reason for the CDC closing reflects a changing need in the populations that the Settlement House serves.
“If we do not continue to reflect the changing needs of the community, we are not serving our people in the best way possible, and that is the core mission of the Settlement House, to be a place to turn to. We strive to offer programs and services that meet the most urgent needs. Unfortunately, sometimes that means weighing the options and making tough decisions,” said Executive Director Sarah Graham.
Although the CDC was a nationally accredited and state licensed center with a capacity for 40 children, it has only been able to maintain a constant enrollment of about 20. However, other programs such as the food and baby pantries, home repair and weatherization, and senior programming have seen consistent growth over the last several years. The Settlement House will continue to explore ways to grow these programs to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the community.
“I hate to see the CDC close,” said supervisor Missy Orr. “But, I am excited at the prospect of growing our other programs that have the ability to serve more clients.”
Plans are underway to move the physical location of the food pantry into the building currently housing the Child Development Center.
“We are pleased with the changes that are happening. We believe that this will help us to become a stronger agency with the capability to meet the growing and changing needs of our community,” said Graham.

It is a sad time at the Settlement House, but please be assured that we are helping the families find care for their children and our staff find other employment. Pearl Bailey once said, "You must change in order to survive." Myself and the Board of Directors believe strongly that this decision will allow the Settlement House to remain a place to turn to for many more years. Our hearts go out to all who are affected by this decision.
